Vacation Three

After joining some int'l church ladies for a breakfast last Wednesday, Sha and I set out to explore the "Creek" area. The Creek is actually an inlet of the ocean, and the best souks are near it. We took a large water taxi and an abra (smaller boat, pictured) to get back and forth across the creek.

Not all of Dubai is posh, as you can see from the second picture. This is probably migrant worker housing. "This is the most racist society I've ever been in," one lady told us. She explained how people are paid according to their nationality, and that it's very much a class-based society.

Danny and Hannah joined us later, and we had fun browsing the fabric souk. Most of the products were from India and Pakistan, and many shopkeepers were Afghani. The souk itself looked like a bit of a tourist attraction. It didn't feel very old or authentic. But since it was far less crowded than some of the other recent souks I've been in, and because the shopkeepers spoke English (which enhanced my ability to barter), it was a more relaxing experience.
