Fun Time, Inspiring Moment

Post Under Construction: I'll try to get the video uploaded soon. I tried for over an hour this evening, but it's too slow so far. In the meantime, enjoy the report of the game!

Most of the staff members from the school where I work went to a national soccer game in the capital on Wednesday. It was at least as good as being at a college football game. I probably haven't been in an atmosphere that charged with team spirit since the Final Four championship game I went to a few years back. Definitely worth the $5 to get in.

It was a frisky crowd. We sat in the women and family section (I'm not sure that we would have been forbidden to sit elsewhere, but we didn't try), which ended up being the foreigners' section. There were a few locals there, too. The upside was that we didn't get stared at quite so much, but the downside was that the atmosphere was a little less charged. We still got into the game, though!

Shortly after I commented to Andrea how nice it was that it wasn't like a stadium sports event at home, where you can sit and watch people go back and forth with cups of beer, some children started going back and forth (back and forth) in our row with cups of apple juice. Huh? So I guess we had our equivalent, but at least they weren't tipsy. And it was awfully nice to witness a crowd having so much fun with no evident alcohol consumption (not saying there was none there, or beforehand, but definitely nothing public, and probably not widespread either way). And actually, our bags were checked and liquids confiscated at the door, so it's unlikely that much was present.

Look for more pictures later. This video-uploading business is slooow.

In a country where the predominant sect frowns upon music, this was a moving moment. It was even more inspiring in person. The posters they are waving are of the national leader. Hannah commented, "Can you imagine a game at home where everyone is waving pictures of Obama?" Um, no. (Thank you.)

The crowd was a bit deflated after the loss, but we still saw some dancing in the streets, and plenty of masks (presumably to protect the identity of anyone who wanted to engage in anything foolish—word gets back to the family, ya know!)

They frown upon music!? Whoa! There's so much I didn't know!

It's so great that you got to go to a game! Yay for you!
