Laughing With Singleness

The perfect way to wind down on Valentine's Day has been to read the article "Surviving Church as a Single" and the accompanying comments. I think the comments might be better than the original article. So I'm going to excerpt a few for you, because there are 541, and I don't expect you to read them all. But read the whole article if you want the full effect.

By the way, I don't consider myself a cynical single, but oh, these made me laugh.

someone once said to me "well so and so may be pretty, but at least you have a good personality!"
so she has no personality and i'm not pretty?? (not singled out)

When your senior pastor wants to do a sermon series geared toward singles and entitles it "Lord of the Ringless" - true story. (KaGar)

"I actually used to have Jesus as my relationship status on Facebook... Granted, I didn't think that through to the awkward moment when I would have to break up with Jesus (on Facebook only of course) to have a relationship with a boyfriend..." (Bekah)

I have a corollary to #5 that I've heard more than once- "Why aren't you married? But you're so pretty!" My response to that is usually, "Yes, it's my wretched personality that turns men away." (Anona)

I had a moment of weakness once when it was said and my response was "I know what you are saying! You are unattractive and overweight. How did you swing it?" Not my shining moment but it was at my best friends baby shower and like the 5th person making that comment. (Blaster)

I've gotten from girl friends, "You're so great! If I was a guy, I'd TOTALLY date you." Nothing like turning dating into an impossible and somewhat creepy situation. (Megan W)

The Assistant Pastor's wife of my home-church used to ask me on a regular basis "when are you going to get married?" After years of giving a polite response I finally smiled and replied "when are you going to die?" She stopped in her tracks and I quickly finished by stating "There are some things we just don't know the answer to." She never asked me that question again. (BSanders)

Okay, I'm probably not allowed to comment on this, but I have to say I burst right into laughter at that last one--AWESOME response!
