What Happens After the Shattering?

Psalm 2:8 is nice: “Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Thine inheritance, and the very ends of the earth as Thy possession.”

Verse 9 is violent: “Thou shalt break [rule] them with a rod of iron, Thou shalt shatter them like earthenware.” Maybe it is violent and nothing else. (Right judgment comforts those wronged.) But peeling it back and looking just under the surface, it’s a picture of absolute conquering. Jesus reigns. And it’s a picture of absolute brokenness. If we stay brittle, God will break us. That breaking is part of Him demonstrating who He is to a watching world.

But once pottery is broken, more than one thing can happen. It can be scattered to the wind, never to be remembered. Or it can be moistened and reformed into something new.

Let’s “kiss the Son” (verse 12) so that we don’t have to worry what verse nine looks like for us. But let’s also remember that He is good at remaking broken things.
