All Things Together for Good!

Remember the ice storm of '08? The one that put us out of power in southwestern NH for 12 days right before Christmas? Yes, it was character building. Yes, it was an adventure. Yes, I have some happy memories from it. Yes, I'm glad it's over.

You know how they say that the Father prepares us for the task He cuts out for us? Well, where I live now is notorious for power outages. The first two weeks I was here, power cut out for maybe 20 minutes once. In the last three or four days, I can't count how many times it's been out, for as long as six or more hours at a time. It's not a life or death thing. The food in the fridge generally keeps. The temperature is fine—no chance of freezing or roasting. I can even usually take a warm shower when the power is out.

However, it is wearing. This morning when I left for a hike in a nearby wadi, there was no power. When I returned, there was no power. No prob . . . except that I had to prepare to go to my first wedding here, and when I took my hair out of the morning's ponytail, it was a big pouf. Like, a big pouf. Not fixable by brushing. Okay, no curling iron or straightener to fix it. No hair dryer to restore it to sanity should I shower. Creativity struck, and I sprayed it down and doused it with the amazing Curl Up hair product Jaycee gave me before I left. Phew. Day saved by going curly.

This evening there was power when I came home, but it went out again before I could charge my phone, which is near death by low battery. Fortunately I plugged in my computer to charge while power was on, which is how I can be writing this now.

So the power outages are merely inconvenient, but they are wearing. However,
1) I have a handy dandy head lamp, which I think Dad bought for me Christmas of '08.
2) I have lived by head lamp and flashlight before!
3) I know how to prepare for power outages
4) I am more grateful for power when I do have it!
