When I moved to the Middle East, some (myself included) had concerns over my safety. Although I almost never felt unsafe in the eight months I lived there, it's still perceived as a risky place.
On Memorial Day weekend, I attended a friend's wedding in Kentucky. As I stood on the edge of the crowd listening to reception announcements in her yard after her wedding, I felt something moving under my sandaled feet. Surprised, I looked down to see that I was standing on the fellow pictured above. I stepped away quickly and stared, wondering if I should tell the others nearby that he was there. (Yeah, that might have been shock.) Someone else decided that it was a good idea to quietly alert people.
He didn't bite me only because he was trying to burrow (if snakes burrow) into his hole. I wasn't scared at the moment I stepped away from him, but I was the moment after that, especially after the hoe wielder said that he was a copperhead! Others questioned that; thank God, I'll never know.
If I had died, the headline might have read, "----- Traveler Dies of Copperhead Bite in Kentucky." What a glorious way to go.
It just goes to show that there is danger everywhere, and the safest place to be is in the middle of God's will, even if that means living in an exciting country . . . or standing on a snake.

Ugh! I shuddered when I read this-- literally!
Tom White of VOM wrote an excellent article on this very concept several years ago, which I never forgot: about the idea of the only safe place on earth is in the middle of God's will.
Very apt. And thank God it's true!
