The Sermon from Calvin & Hobbes

By the way, Mr. Hansen's sermon from Calvin & Hobbes was actually very good. He referred to the comic strip where Calvin is shown selling "A swift kick in the backside--$1.00." Hobbes comes along, sees that business is terrible, comments on it sarcastically, and Calvin responds, "I don't understand . . . Everyone I know needs what I'm selling."

Mr. Hansen went on to talk about pain and how God uses it to get our attention. When we're suffering, our priorities suddenly become very clear. He shared about a time in his life when God spoke to him through a "swift kick," which came in the form of a near-accident on his motorcycle. God was convicting him about something specific, and he made his peace with God before he skidded to the side of the road, unharmed.

He made it clear that not all suffering is God's "swift kick," but that when God does administer "swift kicks," the recipient usually knows exactly why and what he needs to do about it. The message made me more alert to God's wake-up calls in my own life, and helped me have a better perspective on responding rightly to suffering.

(I'm sure that Pauline P. appreciated the sermon by the end, too.)

Maybe he could pass his sermon notes on to Pastor G. Watching the faces of some of the members would be to die for!
