I climbed the mountain with three international students from Keene State College. I met Jane when I interviewed her for a Perspectives class assignment. She explained that one of the difficulties of being an exchange student in Keene is the lack of public transportation. The international students don't have vehicles, don't have public transportation, and would like to see the area! So I provided wheels for an afternoon so that they could get out.
The guys went up and down the mountain far faster than Jane and I did. They preferred to run down the mountain, which musn't have been easy on the steep, boulder-strewn sections of the White Dot Trail. I didn't mind if they did it as long as I didn't have to watch them. And they made it down in one piece.
Jane heard the peepers as we descended the mountain at dusk and asked me about them. I explained that they are little frogs. She, in turn, pointed out the sound to the guys. They got quite a kick out of hearing them every time we passed a marshy section on our drive back to Keene. Ah, life's small joys!
